Moissanite Facts
In 1893, a French Scientist by the name of Dr. Henri Moissan discovered the much-prized mineral know today as "Moissanite." Dr. Moissan was a Nobel Prize-winner and the first to find tiny amounts of this natural silicon carbide within a meteorite.
Moissanite is Very Hard
With the precious Diamond ranking a 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, Moissanite has a hardness of 9.25. It is ranked as the second hardest substance found on the earth! It was not long before geologists decided that the Moissanite would be just perfect for creating pieces of jewelry, but they soon realized, too, that naturally occurring Moissanite gems are simply too small and scarce to make that dream a reality.
It took a full century later to discover that Moissanite could be successfully grown within a lab. Charles and Colvard developed a practical and reliable method to grow this lovely mineral. Today, Charles & Colvard are well-known for their aggressive marketing techniques in getting their find straight to the general public.
Performance of Synthetic Moissanite
Moissanite performed very well in the labs during its initial development. Both for durability as well as with heat testing, the mineral performed admirably. Stones were given to willing subjects for testing and showed to do well during everyday tasks. The stones resisted both scratching and chipping.
Since synthetic Moissanite fared very well during heat tests, it can be cast in place and weathered heat-related repair operations. Charles & Colvard report that their synthetic Moissanite will survive the heat of a typical house fire.
Variety in Color
For some, the brilliance and fire of a Moissanite is preferred even to diamonds. The stones can be found in colorless versions as well as in shades of green, which is a more natural color choice for a true Moissanite.
Test your Moissanite
It is a good idea to have your stone tested. Even some jewelers really cannot tell the difference between a colorless Moissanite and a colorless diamond. This leaves the door wide open for fraudulent or inaccurate sales once an initial Moissanite has been purchased. Don't assume all jewelers will have the proper testing. Some do not.
A True Gem
Your beautiful Moissanite is a true gemstone, even being synthetic. It is neither simulated or fake as some have called it. Your Moissanite will have its own chemical characteristics. If anything else, your gem is unique; and, of course, your Moissanite is stunning! You can wear it with great pride.
